Orange Arrow Spring 2010 Flexible Course Formats Course Listings

Five alternate formats are available for some Syracuse University courses. These courses, open to any part-time matriculated or non-matriculated student, can be used to fulfill program requirements at SU or elsewhere. Academic standards and expectations are the same as for regular semester courses. Prerequisites or other restrictions may apply; see the Credit Schedule (right) for descriptions and restrictions.

Because many classes are contingent upon enrollment, we strongly encourage students to register as soon as possible. Unfilled classes may be canceled. Therefore, early registration enables us to confirm class offerings. Early registration may also allow you to participate in a more flexible payment option. So help us help you! Before matriculated students register for any of these courses, we strongly recommend that you consult with your academic advisor to ensure that courses are appropriate for your individual circumstances.

Students can combine these formats in any way that works for them: an online with an accelerated course, Weekend College with an online course, a condensed course or Weekend College course with a regular semester course, or any other variation.

PLEASE NOTE:
See below for important registration and drop deadlines, and financial aid policies for flexible course formats. Tuition costs and registration forms and procedures are the same as for regular semester courses.

[Back to Course Information home page]

Accelerated Format
Complete a course in seven weeks. Accelerated courses meet in the classroom for nine hours (Saturday and Sunday, 4.5 hours per day). Attendance during this period is required. Students complete the course from home over the remainder of the seven weeks, using various methods (online, e-mail, regular mail). Accelerated courses will meet on campus February 6-7, 2010, continuing online until April 10, 2010.

CHE 113 Forensic Science (4)
WRT 307 Advanced Writing Studio: Advanced Writing (3)

Condensed Format
Students take an entire course in a more concentrated time period. Classes may meet once a week for eight weeks (five hours a night), twice a week for seven weeks (three hours a night), or on the weekends (Friday night and all day Saturday). Classes meeting all day usually have a workshop, presentation, or performance emphasis that makes long class periods desirable.

[No condensed classes are currently scheduled for Spring 2010.]

Hybrid Format
Any combination of classroom and online instruction. Used here to designate such courses that do not use the accelerated or Weekend College formats.

CIS 500 Design and Implementation of Database Management Systems (3)
CIS 558 Data Networks: Basic Principles (3)
ELE 558 Data Networks: Basic Principles (3)

Online Format
Take a course from your computer at home -- no commuting necessary! These classes are conducted over the course of a semester. Online dialogue with the instructor and discussion with your classmates are integral parts of these courses. Students do not need to be computer experts, but basic computer skills are important: sending and receiving e-mail messages, posting to online dicsussion forums, "surfing" the web, and downloading files from a web site. Learn more about online courses, computer requirements and other class information.

Flexible Course Formats Special Information

Registration, Drop Deadlines, and Payment Options
Students who register after the first day of the semester, may be charged a $50 late registration fee. Drop deadlines associated with flexible courses often do not follow the published deadline dates listed on this web site or in the Part-Time Course Schedule.

Payment options are also unique to the start date and length of each class.

Please call 315-443-4135 to speak to a Student Services Coordinator regarding the these aspects of  a particular class.

Financial Aid
Register early for flexible format classes if you wish to receive financial aid! Students who expect to receive financial aid must register by the add deadline of the standard term within which the flexible format class is offered. Stafford loans for students in flexible format classes that begin later within the standard term may disburse on dates varying from those published for the standard term. Therefore, refund processing may also be affected. If you are anticipating the need for financial aid to pay for a class that starts after the official start date of the standard term, you should contact your UC Financial Aid Advisor during early registration for information and assistance.
